Funeral services for former Wayland Baptist cross country and track runner Damarius Lowery were held Aug. 19 at New Day Deliverance Church in Houston.

Lowery, who competed at Wayland for his senior season in 2014-15 after transferring from Central Arkansas, was 25. He died Aug. 12 of an apparent heart attack, according to his former coach, Brian Whitlock.

"Damarius was only at Wayland for a short time, but he was well-liked by me, his teammates and his professors," Whitlock said. "He was a good kid. It's a shame something like that happened to someone so young who had such a good future ahead of him."

Whitlock said Lowery played a pivotal role in the Pioneer cross country team qualifying for nationals in 2014. He earned All-Sooner Athletic Conference honors, placing 10th, as the Wayland men finished second as a team, then at nationals Lowery finished in 137th place as the Pioneers placed 25th.

"Damarius was a valuable member of our program, especially the cross country team," Whitlock said. "He was a vital part of us making the national meet. We wouldn't have made it without him."

Lowery was named Men's Cross Country Newcomer of the Year at Wayland that season. He also earned SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll honors for academic achievement.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree in sociology at WBU in 2015.
