Cross country runner/soccer player Michael Phipps and golfer
Laura Klimova have been named Wayland Baptist University Student-Athletes of the Week.
Before playing in a scrimmage for the soccer team Friday afternoon, Phipps finished fifth out of 58 runners Friday morning at the season-opening Lubbock Christian University Invitational, covering the 3.1-mile course at Chaparral Golf Course in 19 minutes, 37.60 seconds. She helped WBU to a second-place team finish.
Coach Brian
Whitlock called Phipps, a sophomore from Artesia, N.M., "my hardest-working and most-dedicated girl, and that really shows. If I had a whole team of runners as dedicated as her, we would be unstoppable. Michaela has developed into a good runner. She's right there with my two all-Americans and has put herself in a position to be very successful."
Klimova shot a career-best 3-under 69 on her way to finishing fourth out of 45 golfers at the fall season-opening Northwest Iowa National Invitational in Le Mars, Iowa, at Willow Creek Golf Course. Klimova, who also shot rounds of 72 and 80, and her three teammates shot a best-for-this-foursome score of 302 in round two.
A sophomore from the Czech Republic, Klimova was named all-tournament for finishing in the top 10.
