A junior from Welkom, South Africa, van Zyl finished as runner-up at the Purgatory Intercollegiate in Noblesville, Ind. Van Zyl shot a dazzling 72 in the first round at Purgatory Golf Club to hold a three-stroke lead. She closed with an 80 and wound up in second place in the 51-golfer field, a single stroke behind winner Maddie Thomas of fifth-ranked Taylor University (Ind.), the tourney host.
