Wayland Baptist University is committed to supporting character-driven intercollegiate athletics through the NAIA Champions of Character program. The Champions of Character program consists of five core values: Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Sportsmanship and Servant Leadership. These character values help young people - and those associated with their development - make good choices in all aspects of their life and reflect the true spirit of competition. For the second time, Wayland Baptist Athletics earns a Gold Star in the NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Award program for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Wayland most recently earned a Gold Star in the 2019-2020 academic year.

The Champions of Character Scorecard measures a commitment to character training, academic focus, character promotion, conduct in competition, and character recognition on a scale of 0-100 points. Award levels are based on the number of points earned: gold (90-100 points), silver (75-89 points) and bronze (60-74 points).   

Wayland received a Bronze award for the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2017-18, and 2018-19 academic years. WBU earned Silver in 2013-14 and 2016-17. WBU earned Gold in 2019-20 and 2025-26.

Wayland's athletic teams are involved in numerous service projects in the community. The information below shows how each team serves the Plainview community.
