COACH HARLEY REDIN COACH'S AWARD
The Harley Redin Coach's Award is presented to a Wayland alumnus who has demonstrated outstanding success as a head coach at the university or public/private school level. The recipient also is recognized for outstanding contributions to community, school and church.
The award is named in honor of Wayland's most successful coach, Harley Redin. The former World War II bomber pilot coached a total of 27 years at Wayland. He led the Pioneers to a 171-97 record and three national tournament appearances from 1948-57, but it was when he took over as coach of the Flying Queen's in 1955 that Redin carved his place in basketball history.
The Flying Queens won the first 76 games that Redin coached, completing a winning streak that set a collegiate-record of 131 straight victories. During his 18 years as coach of the Queens, Wayland won six Amateur Athletic Union national championships, was runner-up seven times and took third three times. Under his tutelage, Redin's teams won more games than any other women's program in collegiate history, posting a 431-66 record.
Coach Redin is a member of the Wayland Athletic Hall of Honor, the Texas Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame, the Women's National Basketball Hall of Fame and a winner of the prestigious Josten Service Award. In 2018, the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., awarded Redin with the John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award.
Following his retirement, Redin and his wife, Wilda Hutcherson Redin, continued to actively support all phases of the Wayland athletic program.
Coach Redin died Aug. 1, 2020. He would have celebrated his 101st birthday later that month on Aug. 29.
