Basketball and Volleyball

The home of Wayland Baptist University basketball and volleyball teams, Hutcherson Center is located on the western side of the Wayland campus. The 3,000-seat facility was named in honor of the late Claude E. Hutcherson, a major donor to the building and sponsor of the Flying Queens basketball program for more than 50 years. The Flying Queens' locker room was renovated in 2012, thanks in large part to a donation from former Queen Linda Pickens Price. The Pioneers' dressing room was refurbished in 2013 with current head coach Ty Harrelson making a significant lead gift.

The building has undergone major renovations in recent years to the outer facade, lobby and concession areas. Two new state-of-the-art scoreboards were also installed, and most recently, the training room has been enlarged and updated. WBU's athletic offices are housed in Hutcherson Center.

Baseball
Dedicated in the spring of 1999, David & Myrt Wilder Field is the home of the Wayland Pioneer baseball program and is one of the premiere facilities in the region. It features covered seating for 810 people, a full press box, inning-by-inning score board and attached practice infield. Restrooms, concessions, picnic plaza and a first-class sound system add to the baseball experience for visitors.

The facility also features a turf infield, indoor and outdoor batting cages, two locker rooms, and the outfield fence measures 325 feet down the right- and left-field lines and 395 at the center field fence. In the evenings, the Pioneers play under eight 100' light poles that encompass the baseball field.

Soccer and Track
J.V. Hilliard Field is one of the most unique stadiums in the area. The 1,000-seat bowl type facility located just north of Hutcherson Center is actually below ground level, providing a useful and functional windbreak for West Texas winds. Completed in 1964 as a home for the Pioneer track and field teams, the stadium was originally known as the Wayland Bowl, but was renamed Hilliard Field in 1981 to honor Wayland's first track coach and the driving force behind the construction of the stadium.

Now the home to both the Pioneer track and field teams and the WBU soccer teams, Hilliard Field received a major facelift during the summer of 2009. The track surface received a complete overhaul, the soccer field was completely reseeded, and the press box, storage rooms and restrooms were painted and refurbished.

Just outside and to the west of the bowl area, a new fence was constructed, enclosing a new practice soccer field and the shot put and discus pits.

Football
The Wayland football team plays its home games at Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldog Stadium located at Yonkers and 24th Streets. Opened in 1956, Bulldog Staduim seats 8,000 and features artificial turf.

Pete and Nelda Laney Center
The Pete and Nelda Laney Center plays host to a number of athletic events and practices while serving as Wayland's student center at the same time. The Laney center hosts the men's and women's wrestling coaches offices, and is the primary work out spot for the Pioneer wrestlers. There is also an indoor track and work out facility upstairs to go along with three classrooms.

The Laney Center has three full sized basketball and volleyball courts, pool tables, ping pong tables, a big screen tv, rock climing wall, and dance room to go along with the exercise room and snack bar.

Westside Athletic Complex
The Westside Athletic Complex began being developed with the implementation of the practice soccer field on the southwest side of the complex. In 2011, practice football fields were installed on both the northwest and east side of J.V. Hilliard Field. The installation of six portable buildings on the corner of 8th and Yonkers streets were added in 2011. These buildings serve as hosts to the men's and women's soccer teams, football team, and men's and women's track and field and cross country teams. The buildings are used as locker rooms, offices and storage.

Wheeler Building
The 8,500-square-foot Wheeler Building on the corner of Xenia and Eighth streets has being renovated to serve as the fieldhouse for the Pioneer football team, complete with locker room, offices, training areas and film rooms.

A large training area – complete with four Whirlpools – is utilized by the football, baseball, soccer, cross country, and track and field programs. The Wheeler Building also includes three meeting areas – one large enough for close to 75 people – as well as a reception area and laundry facilities.
