Freshman kicker Daniel Martinez was named the NAIA's Special Teams Player of the Week for his role in the Pioneers' 26-14 win over Bacone in Central States Football League action on Saturday in Muskogee, Okla.
The 5-foot-9, 160-pound Martinez, a graduate of Dallas Bryan Adams High School, kicked a Wayland-record four field goals against Bacone from 28, 24, 48 and 45 yards. The last three field goals accounted for the Pioneers' nine fourth-quarter points as Wayland secured its first CSFL victory of the season. Martinez also was 2-for-2 kicking PATs to round out his perfect kicking day. He had seven kickoffs, averaging 58.3 yards per kick, with one touchback.
