Benard broke Wayland’s longest-standing track & field record when he ran a time of 8 minutes, 47.60 seconds in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays held at the University of Texas at Austin. A sophomore from Nakuru, Kenya, Benard bested a field of 14 mostly NCAA Division I student-athletes with the NAIA’s fastest time this season, which broke the old WBU record of 8:56.6 held by Ron Melnichuck since 1975 – 40 years ago! Benard also ran the anchor leg on Wayland's distance medley relay that posted a time of 10 minutes, 0.64 seconds. Benard is the 2014 NAIA cross country national champion and this year's national champion in the indoor 5,000.
