J.J., a 6-foot-5 senior all-American guard from Lubbock, had two monster games as the third-ranked Pioneers opened their season with wins over Arlington Baptist (100-51) and McMurry (85-64) during the McDonald’s Tip-Off Classic.
After scoring 34 points (two off his career-best) in just 27 minutes in a season-opening blowout win, J.J. went for 41 against McMurry to establish a new career-best. He made five 3-pointers in his first 20 minutes of the season while in the two games made 30-of-52 field goals (58 percent), including 10-of-21 3-pointers (48 percent). He also had nine rebounds, five assists, six steals and a block.
The Pioneers play their first road game at 8 p.m. CST Tuesday in Hobbs, N.M., against University of the Southwest before taking on Rice in an exhibition game at 4 p.m. Sunday.
