Jake recently shined in two tournaments, first at the season-opening Mid-South Classic in Newton, Kan., then three days later at the Andrews Invitational where he finished in second place.
At Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Kansas, Jake shot rounds of 79-76—155 (round 3 was cancelled due to weather). He tied for sixth place in the 62-player field as the Pioneers tied for second place as a team.
At Andrews Country Club, Jake came within a stroke of matching the team record when he shot an opening 8-under 64 (record is 63 by teammate Joshua Smedema). He followed that with a 70 for a 30-under 134 total, one behind the winner. Jake’s 64 was part of Wayland’s 267 team score, one off the program record.
"Jake was upset he didn't pull out the win, but he's getting closer every time," coach Tom Harp said. The junior from Artesia, N.M., also went low at Andrews last year, firing a then career-best 66 in the first round before carding a second-round 73. "Jake qualified really well, and to see him play like this is great," Harp said. "That bodes well for us going forward."
