Former Wayland Baptist all-American Rohan Thompson joined the Wayland staff in 2007 as an assistant coach for track and field before becoming the head coach in 2011.
In his first year as head coach, Thompson led the team to the NAIA Men’s Indoor Track and Field national championship and was named NAIA Men’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year. The championship team produced the most points (108) in a championship since 1995 and won the crown by the widest margin (36) since 1989.
During his four previous seasons on the WBU coaching staff as an assistant, the Pioneer teams won two indoor and three outdoor national track and field championships.
Thompson’s sprinters set three school records during the 2008 indoor and outdoor seasons and won five national championships in individual and relay events. In 2009, Wayland’s sprinters established four more school marks and swept the women’s short sprints at the NAIA championships. That same year, the 4x100-meter relay team captured its third consecutive national title.
Two Pioneer male sprinters won All-American honors in 2010, as did one jumper and both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.
In 2012, the men's team NAIA Indoor Championships for the first time in 23 years. Five athletes won individual championships, two relay teams won titles, and five school records were broken. At the women's outdoor championships, Thompson's 4x100m relay won the national championship and set a new school record in the process.
Thompson coached the Pioneer men's team to runner-up finishes in the indoor and outdoor championships in 2014. At the outdoor championships, the 4x400m relay won the title, and at the outdoor championships, the 4x100 and 4x400m relays won championships. Three other individuals took home a national championship at the indoor meet, one being named the meet's outstanding performer and another the meet's most valuable performer.
A former sprinter himself, Thompson, who hails from Barbados, received four NAIA all-American designations during his three years at Wayland. The 2006 recipient of the Bill Hardage Champions of Character Award at WBU, he is a two-time NAIA Scholar Athlete and was a Pioneer co-captain during his senior season. Thompson was named the track team’s Most Valuable Male Athlete in 2005 and won Sooner Athletic Conference Championship honors in the 100 meters in 2004.
Thompson worked as a graduate assistant in the program when his collegiate eligibility expired before officially joining the staff.
