After serving for 15 years as Wayland Baptist's head volleyball coach, Jim Giacomazzi took on the added role of director of athletics on June 1, 2022.

Giacomazzi came to Wayland in 2007 as head coach of the Pioneer volleyball program. Going into the 2022 season, he ranked in the top 15 in the NAIA among active coaches for all-time victories with 423.

Giacomazzi moved to the Panhandle area in 1991 to take the helm at West Texas A&M University. He led the Lady Buffs to a 36-2 record that year and an NCAA Division II national championship. He followed that up with a 30-11 record and a third-place finish in the NCAA Elite 8 Tournament in 1992.

Upon returning to coaching in 2007 after 15 years in the private sector, Giacomazzi promptly turned around a Wayland program that had eight straight sub-.500 seasons. His WBU teams enjoyed 11 consecutive winning campaigns with no fewer than 17 victories, including a school-record 36-7 mark and an appearance in the NAIA Final Four in 2013. Entering the 2023 season, Giacomazzi has amassed a 311-222 record at WBU, an average of 19.4 wins per season.

The Pioneers captured their first-ever Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament Championship in 2008 and reached the finals again in 2010 and 2013. In 2013, Giacomazzi led the Pioneers to their most successful season in the program's history. Wayland advanced to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time, making it all the way to the semifinals before falling to the eventual national champion. At the national tournament, WBU was named the NAIA Tournament Champions of Character Team. The Pioneers also set the record for wins in a season (36) in 2013.

Giacomazzi's players and teams consistently earn both NAIA and Sooner Athletic Conference honors for academics, including earning the AVCA Team Academic Award the past seven straight seasons.

A graduate of Azusa Pacific University, Giacomazzi holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Christian Education and Biblical Education and a Master’s in Education from the California institution. He played professional baseball in the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres organizations from 1981-83 before turning to coaching. He served as head volleyball coach at Oral Roberts University (1985-86+, 42-34) and at the University of Nevada-Reno (1989-1990, 6-55) prior to West Texas A&M (1991-92, 66-13).

His career coaching record is 425-322 (.569), including 311-222 (.583) at Wayland.

Giacomazzi is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, having served on the board of directors the past five years including as chair of the Head Coaches Committee. He is a board member and the Junior Rep for the Sun Country Region of USA Volleyball. In addition, he is a Master IMPACT Clinician and holds a CAP III Certification with USA Volleyball.

Giacomazzi is married to Trisha, an assistant professor of education at WBU. They have three children, Kris, Nick and former WBU volleyball player Natasha, as well as four grandchildren.
