Brownwood, Tex.--- Shiloh Posey, coach of the Wayland Baptist Pioneer soccer team, had some concerns about how well his young team would respond after the long bus ride to get to Friday afternoon's season opening soccer game against Howard Payne University. Turns out he was right to be worried as the WBU women managed just one shot on goal in a 1-0 loss to the Yellow Jackets.
The lone goal of the match came at the 20 minute mark of the second period. Defense was the name of the game in the first half, as neither goalie had a chance to make a save. HPU outshot the Pioneers 8-3 in those first 45 minutes, but the offensive chances were much more even after intermission with the Wayland offense getting off four shots to five for the Yellow Jackets.
Sophomore Najuka Anderson had two shots for the Pioneers. Freshman Tyneeka Stringer came off the bench to get the only shot on goal for WBU.
The Pioneers return home for two matches next week. On Tuesday they take on the University of the Southwest at 3 p.m., and then meet New Mexico Highlands on Friday at 4 p.m.
