Pioneer Women Win Opener

Hobbs, NM---The Pioneer women's soccer team picked up a "W" in their first action of the season, defeating University of the Southwest 3-0 Tuesday afternoon.

Najuka Anderson, Brittany Johnson and Michelle Enriquez picked up the goals for Wayland, while goalkeeper Kylie Middleton recorded the fourth shutout of her career.

"The girls played super good," said WBU Coach Shiloh Posey, who is in his third season as head of the Pioneer women's soccer program. "We started off a little bit rough, a little disorganized, and there is still some work that needs to be done, but that is to be expected this early and overall I was very pleased.

"Everyone played and everyone contributed, from the returning players to the transfers and freshmen."

Posey particularly pointed out sophomore returnee Brittany Johnson, sophomore transfer Ashley Woodall, and junior transfer Roxanne Paslay.

"Britt did a really good job all day. The goal she scored was a header off a corner kick by Jessica Hershon. Ashley was a real trooper. She ran the outside all day, and Roxey created plays and had several really good opportunities."

Anderson scored the first goal, unassisted, off a rebound. Johnson made it 2-0 at the intermission, and Enriquez, a freshman, contributed the lone goal of the second period, dribbling around a group of a defenders before kicking the ball into the net.

The Pioneers have a couple of days off before hitting the road once again where they will face Texas Wesleyan and Northwood University this Friday and Saturday in the Metroplex.
