Women Even Up Their Record

It wasn't necessarily a thing of beauty, but the Pioneer women recorded their second win of the season with a 2-1 victory over McMurry University on Thursday afternoon at Hilliard Field.

After a scoreless first half in which WBU took 20 shots, but put only three in front of the net, the visitors from Abilene got the first goal of the contest five minutes into the second period. Amber Torres got behind the Pioneer defense and took a pass from Ashton Morgan for her first goal of the season.

Wayland finally got on the board 20 minutes later with two goals in under five minutes of each other, both off the foot of junior Roxy Paslay. The first was set up by a pretty pass from Jenee' Norris, while the second came when Brittany Johnson's shot went off the goal post and into the path of Paslay, who buried it in the back of the net.

Pioneer coach Shiloh Posey was pleased with the win, but a little disappointed in the way his team started out.

"The girls never quit, and compared to our past two games, the communication and passing have both improved. Saying that, however, we still didn't play the way that I think we are capable of playing."

Kylie Middleton got the start in goal for the Pioneers. The junior for Lubbock faced just two shots in her half of work. Freshman Shelby Ohler picked up the first win of her career, playing the second period, and making one save.

Wayland has the weekend off before traveling to Odessa next Tuesday, the 8th for a match against the University of Texas-Permian Basin. That contest gets underway at 3 p.m.
