Pioneer Women Fall in OT

BROWNWOOD, Tex. --- The Wayland women's soccer team overcame a two-goal deficit with second period goals by Emarie Holland and Haley Hill, but Howard Payne scored almost six minutes into the first overtime period to defeat the Pioneers 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.

HPU got both their goals within eight minutes of each other a little over halfway through the first period.

Holland, a freshman from Burkburnett, Tex., scored her first career goal at the 53:07 mark off a deflection. Fellow freshman Kathleen Stewart picked up the assist.

A senior from San Angelo, Tex., Hill took a pass from Holland at midfield a little over seven minutes later that deflected off a defender and put it past the Yellow Jacket goalkeeper to tie the score at 2.

Each team put two more shots on the opposing net-minder in the final minutes of regulation, but neither could break the plane of the goal line.

In the overtime period, Howard Payne's Leslie Jones took a pass from the right side and put it past WBU junior Samantha Garcia for the game winner. The final goal came 5:56 into the extra period.

HPU outshot the Pioneers 21-11. Hill led Wayland with five shots, three on goal. Garcia made six saves in the contest, two in the first half and four in the final period.

The loss puts WBU at 1-2 on the season. They resume play on Thursday with a road trip to Portales, NM to take on the Zias of Eastern New Mexico. That contest begins at 4 pm Mountain Time.
