PORTALES, NM --- Freshman Kathleen Stewart scored her fourth goal of the season in a 6-1 loss to Eastern New Mexico University late Thursday afternoon.
Stewart headed in a corner kick from Ashley Woodall seven minutes into the game to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead.
ENMU came back to tie it 11 minutes later on a breakaway by Maurisa Jones. The Zias put one more goal in before the end of the first period to make it 2-1.
The second 45 minutes was not a good one for the Pioneers. The hosts scored four unanswered goals, including two by Sydney Tucker.
The playing field was decidedly tilted as ENMU outshot Wayland 28-9 and had a 14-4 advantage on shots on goal.
Senior Najuka Anderson and Emarie Holland, a freshman, had two shots each for the Pioneers, who fell to 1-3 on the season.
Both Wayland soccer teams are back in action on Monday, Sept. 20 when they host the Mustangs of the University of the Southwest. The women's contest is scheduled to begin at 5 pm with the men to follow at 7 pm.
