Wayland Women Conclude Record-Breaking Year

LUBBOCK, Texas --- The Wayland women's soccer team completed its 2011 season with a 1-1 tie in double overtime against Lubbock Christian on a sunny Tuesday afternoon.  The tie brought the Pioneers record to 6-10-2 overall and 1-8-2 in conference action.  The six wins are the most by a team in the eight-year history of women's soccer at Wayland.

The Lady Chaps, who are headed for the conference postseason tournament as the eighth seed with 3-6-2 league record and an overall mark of 5-9-2, got on the board first when Stacy-Ann Johnson found the back of the net five minutes before the intermission.

Speedy freshman Jordan James took a good pass from fellow freshman Sarah Lauderdale almost 20 minutes into the final period and buried it in the net to even up the scoreboard.

The Pioneers had one more shot in both the second half and in the first overtime than did the Lady Chaps.  Each team got off three shots in the final ten minute extra period, none of which made it on goal.

Emarie Holland, a sophomore, led WBU with five shots.  James and Katherine Teinert, yet another freshman on head coach Shiloh Posey's very young team, recorded two shots each.

It was a record-breaking year in many respects for Posey's group, which will lose just one player to graduation.  Not only did the Wayland women break the school mark for wins in a season, but they also established new records for goals (30) and shutouts (4), and tied the record for most assists (19).

Individually, junior Courtney Chambers set a new bar for WBU goalkeepers with her six wins and four shutouts.   Holland and freshman Sarah Castro tied individual game marks for points (6) back on Aug. 29, and Holland got the third hat trick in Wayland history, also on Aug. 29.  One other freshman, Megan Huerta, tied the record for assists in a game with three in the same game.
