Box Score The Wayland men stayed right with third-ranked Oklahoma Baptist for the first 30 minutes of their game on Saturday afternoon at Hutcherson Center, but the Bison proved to be too much and remained undefeated with a 73-57 victory over the Pioneers.
Junior Robert Curtis, a 6'10 lefthanded center who joined the WBU men during the Christmas break, went 8-for-9 from the field and had a game-high 17 points. Bobby Watkins added 14 and George Williams contributed 11 for the Pioneers, who fell to 7-8 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
The visitors led throughout much of the first half, but the Pioneers stayed close, never straying more than five points from the lead. Trailing 20-15 with 11:30 left in the opening period, the Pioneers scored 10 of the next 12 points to take a 25-22 advantage.
OBU went back on top until Williams tied the score at 32 with 51 seconds on the clock. Curtis hit one of two free throws with just seconds to go before the intermission to make it 33-32 WBU at the half.
The two teams traded the lead during the first six minutes of the second period until the Bison's Deangelo McIntosh hit a trey at the 14:09 mark to put his team on top for good.
The Pioneers hit 52 percent (23-of-44) from the field and 50 percent (8-of-16) from the free throw line. They attempted only six long distance shots, getting points on three of them.
On the other end, Oklahoma Baptist went 31-of-60 (51.7%), including 6-of-20 from beyond the arch. The Bison were 5-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Emmanuel Wilson was the game's top scorer with 23 points. McIntosh tallied 19 and had a game-high nine rebounds.
OBU outscored WBU 40-20 in the paint and won the battle of the boards 33-23. Neither team had much success taking care of the ball. Wayland had 22 turnovers, while OBU committed 19 miscues.
Wayland returns to the road next week with SAC games at Mid-American Christian and Oklahoma City University on Thursday and Saturday.
