Oklahoma Baptist was determined not to let the Wayland Baptist Pioneers even sniff an upset this time.
Behind 25 points from hot-shooting Chase Adams, the 10
th-ranked Bison rolled to a 69-48 win over the Pioneers in Sooner Athletic Conference play on Thursday night in Hutcherson Center.
The Pioneers' third straight loss leaves the team with a 13-11 overall record and a 4-7 SAC mark. OBU improved to 20-5 and 8-3.
It was the lowest offensive output by a Pioneer team coached by
Matt Garnett. The previous low for the program came in a 56-44 loss to Rogers State two seasons ago.
The Bison led 33-20 at halftime and never let the Pioneers back in the game in the final 20 minutes. When the teams met in the first half of SAC play in Shawnee, Okla., Wayland dropped a much closer contest to an OBU team ranked No. 1 at the time, 74-66.
Reggie Fondren was the only Pioneer to reach double-digit scoring with 17 points.
Juhreece Thompson added eight. For OBU, David Johnson followed Adams' 25 points with 13.
Wayland twice led in the game, the last time at 14-12 after a 3-pointer by Fondren with 13:43 left in the first half. OBU scored the next eight points, and the Pioneers never saw the lead again.
OBU ended the half with another 8-0 spurt to go up 33-20 at halftime.
The closest Wayland got in the second half was nine points, 38-29, on a 3-pointer by
Tanner Hazelbaker. The Bison's largest lead was 22, 68-46.
The Pioneers shot just 30 percent (16-of-53) from the field, compared to OBU's 49 percent (25-of-51). Both teams hit six 3-pointers, with Adams netting five of OBU's. Fondren put in three bombs for WBU.
The Bison outrebounded Wayland, 38-28.
Wayland returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday against St. Gregory's University (6-14, 0-10), the SAC's last-place team still looking for its first conference and first road win of the season. The Cavaliers fell to Lubbock Christian on Thursday, 74-62.
