USAO denies Wayland another Top 25 upset

Box Score

With a chance to hand a second top 25 team its first loss of the season, the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team instead was defeated by No. 23 Science and Arts of Oklahoma at Hilliard Field on Tuesday, 4-1.

Fueled by Jade Ovendale's three-goal performance, the Drovers (10-0) kicked off their Sooner Athletic Conference schedule by denying Wayland its second conference win over a top 25 team in four days. The Pioneers (1-7-1, 1-1) opened SAC play on Saturday by winning their first match of the season, 1-0 over No. 18 Oklahoma City University.

It took Ovendale just four minutes to score her first goal on a ball that was cleared up the middle of the field for an open shot.

Ovendale made it 2-0 some 20½ minutes in when she gathered the ball and shot from the right into the bottom of the Wayland goal. Just nine minutes later, the senior from England was at it again as she took a cross from freshman Morgan Wilson and found the back of the net.

Ovendale, who going into the match ranked No. 1 in the nation in shots attempted and No. 3 in goals, now has 19 goals on the season. This was her third three-goal match of the year.

After halftime, Wayland avoided the shutout when junior Annysa Plata notched her first goal of the season. Jodian Morris got the ball to Heather Terbush who passed to Plata who sent the ball into the net with a left-footed swing.

With the Pioneers back to within striking distance, the Drovers ramped up the pressure again. Within seven minutes of Wayland making it 3-1, USAO took it back to a three-goal match when Wilson recorded her first career goal.

The Drovers almost had as many shots on-goal, 10, as Wayland had total shots, 12. USAO ended with 22 shots overall while Wayland had four shots on goal.

Wayland is back in action at noon Saturday in Oklahoma City against Mid-America Christian. MACU (8-1, 1-0) defeated Southwestern Assemblies of God, 1-0, in their SAC opener on the road on Friday. The Pioneers' next home match is against SAGU on Oct. 10.
