Women's soccer stages impressive rally but falls in OT

VICTORIA – Wayland Baptist rallied from two goals down to force overtime, but the Pioneers fell to unbeaten Houston-Victoria here Friday afternoon, 3-2.
 
The match was scoreless until the Jaguars netted their first goal by Sheilat Akapo 16½ minutes after intermission. Just over a minute later, Akapo assisted on a goal by Emily Lupton that made it 2-0.
 
Wayland (0-2-0) got one back on a goal by Jodian Morris in the 77th minute, then two minutes later Julia Bianchi recorded the equalizer on a free kick from just outside the penalty box.
 
Victoria (2-0-1) won it on a goal by Lupton less than five minutes into the extra period. It was the only shot taken by either team in overtime.
 
The Pioneers were outshot, 22-9. Victoria had 10 shots on goal, twice as many as Wayland. Morris and Bianchi had two on-target goals apiece, while Tori Nimtz added one.
 
WBU keeper Erin Moon registered seven saves.
 
The Cougars opened their season by blasting No. 19 Science and Arts of Oklahoma, 4-0, before tying Schreiner, 1-1 in double overtime.
 
Wayland heads to Houston to take on the University of St. Thomas at 3 p.m. Sunday. The Celts were 1-1-0 going into today's match against No. 10 University of Mobile, having lost to Texas Southern, 1-0 in overtime, and defeated Mid-America Christian, 1-0.
 
The Pioneers' home-opener is 3 p.m. Sept. 11 against Emporia State (Kan.).
