#16 JBU ends Pioneers' season

Box Score SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Wayland Baptist had played John Brown University to some close matches in recent women's soccer action on the Golden Eagles' home pitch.

Friday night wasn't one of them.

After a hard-fought match against No. 16 John Brown, the Pioneers' season came to an end in the quarterfinals of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament as Wayland fell to the Golden Eagles, 7-0.

"The effort level overall was pretty solid, but they're a really good squad and they made us pay for some of the mistakes we made, and they capitalized on those opportunities," Wayland coach Shiloh Posey said.

What began as a defensive bout soon turned in favor of the top-seeded Golden Eagles (16-1-1) with three goals – by Sara Lachance in the 25th minute, Aspen Robinson in the 37th minute, and Jastin Redman in the 39th minute.

The eighth-seeded Pioneers (4-11-2) tried to counter with two on-goals shots by Caddie Boline and Alyson Claybourne, but to no avail.

Holding a 3-0 halftime lead, JBU was in the driver's seat and didn't budge an inch. In fact, the Golden Eagles kept their foot on the gas and pushed across four more goals. Lachance scored two of them to get the hat trick.

Wayland, which was outshot by John Brown, 24-6, had a tough time generating any offense over its last four matches, all shutout losses.

"The girls gave a lot, and I'm really proud of that," Posey said.

Wayland has never beaten JBU in women's soccer in 14 matches (0-11-3).

"We learned some good lessons and we will take those with us and try to implement them next year," Posey said.

The Golden Eagles move on to face fourth-seeded St. Gregory's, a 2-1 winner over Oklahoma City, on Monday. In other first-round matches, Texas Wesleyan drummed Southwestern Christian, 9-0, and USAO ousted Mid-America Christian, 4-1.
