Women's soccer falls to unbeaten USW

Box Score HOBBS, N.M. – The Wayland Baptist women's soccer team traveled to the University of the Southwest here Wednesday looking for their first win of the young season. The Pioneers weren't able to secure it, however, as the unbeaten Lady Mustangs prevailed, 3-0.

"We created several chances and opportunities, we're just having trouble finding the goal right now," Posey said. "But our defense really played lights out."

The Pioneers (0-4-0) were outshot 27-5, with four of Wayland's shots on goal. Chelsea Beaubouef and Shonte Tremblett each recorded one on-target shot while Gabby Maguire tallied two. Wayland goalkeeper Erin Moon played the entire 90 minutes, totaling 11 saves.

The Lady Mustangs (5-0-0) scored their first goal with one second left in the first half off of a corner kick by Alexis Gibson.

"Giving the goal away right before half was a bit of a sting," Posey said.

The second two goals were scored after intermission, the first off of a penalty kick by Barbara De Souza minutes into the second half. Close to 10 minutes later, Savannah Villegas scored on a line drive which sent the ball went between Moon's legs.

Despite the loss, Posey is pleased overall with the effort displayed by his team.

"The girls have played well in all the games, we just haven't come out on the winning side yet, which can be discouraging as the season continues," Posey said.

He said the Pioneers are facing several obstacles they must find a way to overcome.

"We've been dealing with a lot of injuries," he said.

The coach acknowledged that due to the injuries the healthy Pioneers have had to play extended minutes, making it harder on the team as a whole.

"My focus right now is keeping our mentality positive as we move forward," Posey said. "We have several opportunities coming up to go and get a couple of wins. We're just going to take one game at a time and try to make them pay off.

"It's just a rough patch for us. We are going to get it turned around."

The team stays on the road this weekend for the third stop of a four-game road swing in Austin to play Huston-Tillotson at 1 p.m. Saturday.
