Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Pioneers spread the fun around in record-setting 8-0 win over Bacone

Eight different players scored and six had assists to lead No. 11 Wayland to a record-setting 8-0 win over Bacone College on Saturday afternoon at Hilliard Field.

The win – against a team that last year tied the national champions 1-1 – kept Wayland (11-2, 6-1 SAC) atop the Sooner Athletic Conference standings with two very tough matches to play in the regular-season.

Bacone (0-7, 0-7), which got a late start to its season due to the school temporarily closing its doors this summer, remained winless. Saturday's match was rescheduled from last month when Bacone determined it would field a team.

The ball rarely crossed into Wayland's defensive side of the field as the Pioneers outshot the Warriors, 45-1. Twenty-one different Pioneers saw the field against Bacone's 12-person squad.

It took Wayland just 5 minutes, 36 seconds to score its first goal, by James Westfield. Alexis Castillo, Adir Versano, Molley Karpey and Ricardo Ramos on a penalty kick also scored first-half goals to put the Pioneers comfortably in front at intermission, 5-0.

In the second half, Theirry Zabarel, Chris Eduardo and Luis Morin found the goal to give Wayland the 8-0 win.

Castillo and Molley Karpeh had two assists apiece. Ramos, Westfield, Jose Hincapie, Versano logged one each.

The Pioneers fell short of the program record for most goals in a match, established in a 9-1 win over Huston-Tillotson two seasons ago.

WBU did break records for its 45 shots (old record 39 vs. Paul Quinn last season), 27 shots on-goal (old record 19 vs. Dallas Christian in 2011) and 24 points (old record 23 vs. Huston-Tillotson in 2017).

WBU is just one shutout short of breaking the program record of 11. Saturday's was the Pioneers' fifth win in a row, all by shutout. All but one of Wayland's wins have been shutouts.

WBU plays its final home match of the season at 6 p.m. Tuesday against University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (10-3-2, 4-1-2), ranked the equivalent of 33rd in the NAIA. USAO defeated Southwestern Assemblies of God on Friday, 5-1. The Drovers' two outings before that were ties, 0-0 with No. 18 Southwestern Christian at 1-1 with Texas Wesleyan.

Tuesday will be Senior Day with Wayland's seniors honored before kickoff.

The Pioneers wind up the regular-season Saturday, Oct. 27 in Bethany, Okla., against No. 18 Southwestern Christian (12-2-1, 4-1-1).
