Women's soccer can't extend win streak

McPHERSON, Kan. – Looking to extend their program record win streak, the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team instead fell to Central Christian College in Sooner Athletic Conference play here Saturday afternoon, 3-2.

The Pioneers (8-3-1, 3-1 SAC), who went into the match atop the conference standings, fell behind 3-0. And while the made a valiant comeback, the Pioneers ran out of time before they could add their sixth consecutive victory.

The Tigers (8-4, 3-1) scored goals – the second on a free kick from 30 yards out – exactly two minutes apart midway through the first half, then made it 3-0 less than three minutes after halftime.

But Wayland made a game of it, getting a pair of goals from Taylor Moore in the 70th minute then again in the 80th minute. Megan Attenborough assisted on Moore's second goal, which boosted the junior's team-high total to eight.

The Pioneers were able to get off only one more shot the rest of the way, by Attenborough with 32 seconds to play. But it was saved by CCC keeper Charis Ball.

Wayland outshot CCC, 18-8, with nine goals on-goal compared to nine for the home team. Moore took half of the Pioneers' shots, all but three of which were on-goal. Two of Attenborough's five shots were on-the-mark.

The loss leaves WBU in a three-way tie for first place in the SAC with Central Christian and Texas Wesleyan (8-3, 3-1). Lurking in the shadows are No. 25 Oklahoma City (5-2-2, 2-1-1), No. 24 USAO (10-3, 2-1) and No. 6 John Brown (9-2-1, 1-1-1). USAO won at John Brown on Saturday, 2-1.

Wayland wraps up the regular-season by playing four of those top teams, starting with John Brown on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. at Hilliard Field.
