Ricardo Ramos and
James Quinn scored goals 2½ minutes apart in the first half, and the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team dominated possession as the fourth-ranked Pioneers picked up a 2-0 victory over University of the Southwest (N.M.) on Saturday night at Hilliard Field.
Playing their final match before the start of Sooner Athletic Conference play in seven days, the defending national champion Pioneers (5-1) posted their fourth shutout of the season and second win since suffering their lone loss to No. 20 Columbia, Mo.
Against USW (1-4), Wayland maintained control of the ball the majority of the match. The Mustangs managed to get off just two shots the entire way, compared to 16 for Wayland.
Ramos scored his fourth goal of the season on a free kick from just outside the penalty box in the 32
nd minute.
Ninety-three seconds later, Quinn scored for the second straight game when he chipped a rebound over the keeper's head from about 15 yards out.
The Pioneers were mostly content to play keep away the rest of the match.
Nine players took Wayland's 16 shots, with
Stefano Pesce's three leading the way. Seven of the Pioneers' shots were on-goal.
WBU now begins defense of its back-to-back SAC titles, starting with a home match against Bacone at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22. The Warriors will be making their season debut. (Bacone has played an abbreviated schedule due to a recent threat of the school closing.)
