Junior transfer
Estefany Gonzalez scored her first goal as a Pioneer, and it was enough to lead the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Texas-Permian Basin on Saturday afternoon at Hilliard Field.
"We played well as a team. It was a definite positive turn-around over the last few days," WBU coach
Shiloh Posey said.
The win was the fourth of the season for Wayland (4-2-1), matching the program's win total from each of the last two seasons.
Gonzalez scored what Posey called "a textbook goal…just the way you draw it up," in the 25
th minute, assisted by
Madison McComasky.
"We had two other goals that were called back due to offside, but I appreciate the energy and effort by the team today," Posey said.
New goalkeeper
Jennette Guia recorded eight saves to earn the shutout, the third for Wayland this season.
UTPB (1-4) took 15 shots compared to Wayland's 11. Both teams had eight shots on-goal.
Taylor Moore paced the Pioneers with four shots, three of which were on-target, while
Megan Attenborough added three shots, two of which were on-goal.
Wayland evened the all-time series with the Falcons at 6-6-1.
"It was a good way to go into our conference season," Posey said.
Wayland has the next 10 days off after it was announced earlier this week that Bacone – the team the Pioneers were to host next Saturday – will not field a women's soccer team this season. That results in a non-conference forfeit win for Wayland.
The Pioneers' next outing is Sept. 25 at home against Texas Wesleyan (5-1) in what will be WBU's Sooner Athletic Conference opener.
