Pioneers named NABC Team of Week

The National Association of Basketball Coaches has named the Wayland Baptist Pioneers the NAIA Team of the Week.

The honor comes as a result of the 24th-ranked Pioneers defeating No. 12 Oklahoma City and Southwestern Christian in road games last Thursday and Saturday, helping send Wayland to the top of the Sooner Athletic Conference standings.

Wayland (12-4, 7-1 SAC) defeated OCU, 76-75, on the strength of hitting 27-of-30 free throws. The Pioneers then took down Southwestern Christian, which had won its last five games, 77-75 on a bucket by J.J. Culver with three seconds left.

Culver, who scored 26 points in each game, was named SAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the second consecutive time, and Ty Harrelson was recognized as HoopDirt.com NAIA Coach of the Week.

Also honored by the NABC as teams of the week were the University of Mississippi (NCAA Division I), Slippery Rock University (NCAA-DII), the College of Wooster (NCAA-DIII), and Iowa Lakes Community College (NJCAA - 2-year colleges).

WBU has won its last four outings, previously beating former Top 25 teams Texas Wesleyan and Southwestern Assemblies of God University. The Pioneers are back in action at 8 p.m. tonight against Oklahoma-Panhandle State, after the No. 6 Flying Queens, who also are in first place in the SAC, host OPSU at 6.
