It took
Fortune Kede less than six minutes into the match to score, but the Pioneers couldn't get another ball in the net over the next 104 minutes as the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team settled for a 1-1, double-overtime tie with Mid-America Christian
on Tuesday afternoon at Hilliard Field.
"I was proud of the team effort today," WBU coach
Shiloh Posey said. "MACU is always a tough opponent and the games tend to be very close, and today was no different."
It was Wayland's first double-overtime tie since an identical 1-1 finish with the Evangels on the same field in 2015, when the Pioneers had three double-OT standoffs.
Wayland moved to 4-1-2 on the season and 1-0-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, while MACU moved to 4-3-1 and 0-1-1.
Kede scored her sixth goal of the season by dribbling around two defenders and scoring from 15 yards away.
"We started the game with urgency and pressed them a bit. We had a good chance to score early in the game and Fortune's goal gave us a lift," Posey said.
Wayland, playing its first game since rolling past Oklahoma-Panhandle State
10-0 a week earlier, maintained the lead until the 69
th minute when MACU junior Marga Franco knotted it up when she scored inside the box after a deflected free kick. It was her first goal of the season
Both teams had a handful of chances after that, including one by Wayland's leading scorer
Taylor Moore in the second overtime.
"Taylor had a great chance in the second OT, but the goalkeeper made a good save," Posey said. "We had several opportunities through the game, but were just a bit off and MACU did a good job of defending, literally clearing two chances off of the goal line."
Wayland ended with 11 shots including five on-goal, compared to 17 and six for MACU. Kede and Moore had four shots and two on-target goals apiece.
The Pioneers next play

"We're looking forward to the next game, with some time to rest before next week," Posey said. "We have a couple of players that the rest will help."
WBU is next at home
