Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer falls in Fort Worth; to open playoffs at John Brown on Saturday

FORT WORTH – Hoping to pick up some momentum prior to the Sooner Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championships, Wayland Baptist wound up suffering its fifth-straight loss, falling here Tuesday evening to Texas Wesleyan in the final game of the regular-season, 2-1.

"We played a really good game," Wayland coach Shiloh Posey said. "We possessed the ball a lot, moved the ball well, and had multiple opportunities. I think the girls were trying to be unselfish a little bit too much at times and it would get picked off or something would happen."

The Pioneers gave up two tough goals, the first by Tameir Grosvenor just 28 seconds before halftime.

"We kept our heads up and continued to play ball," Posey said.

The Pioneers hung tough and evened the score when senior Taylor Moore pushed in her team-best 12th goal of the season in the 84th minute.

"We didn't break the glass on the goal until really late," Posey said.

Just 50 seconds after Wayland tied it, Texas Wesleyan's Kristen Carter, who assisted on the first goal, scored the game-winner for the Rams.

Posey said the goal came after a corner kick. "The ball got knocked around a little bit and they were able to score."

Wayland outshot Texas Wesleyan by one, 21-20, and got 13 shots on-goal compared to nine for the Rams. Moore was credited with eight shots, including three on-target.

Freshman Jessie Rivera was in goal for Wayland.

"I have nothing but good to say about the girls and the way they played tonight. They played extremely well," Posey said. "I couldn't ask for more."

The loss didn't change Pioneers' seeding for the conference tournament. Wayland (6-6-2, 3-5-1 SAC) will be the No. 7 seed in the eight-team, single-elimination tournament that gets under way Saturday at campus sites of the higher-seeded team.

Wayland will be heading to Siloam Springs, Ark., to take on 10th-ranked, second-seeded John Brown (12-3-2, 7-1-1), a frequent post-season opponent for the Pioneers. WBU lost at then No. 8 John Brown on Oct. 19, 3-0.

"We were missing a couple of players and played a good game anyway," Posey said. "Hopefully with everybody back who was missing we give ourselves another good opportunity to win."

Saturday's match will start at 5 p.m.

"We were talking after the game and I told the girls it's an 0-0 season. We're going to give our best effort to make it 1-0."
