FORT WORTH – Texas Wesleyan rushed for 322 yards while Wayland Baptist's offense never really got rolling here Saturday afternoon as the Pioneers went down to the Rams in a Sooner Athletic Conference contest, 24-6.
Texas Wesleyan (3-7, 3-5 SAC) took a 17-0 lead – scoring on runs of 10 and 14 yards and a 39-yard field goal – before Wayland got on the board with a 39-yard field goal by
Kaleb Thornton with 56 seconds left before halftime.
The Pioneers (4-5, 3-4) got another field goal from Thornton, this one from 28 yards, with 5½ minutes left in the third as Wayland pulled to within 17-6.
But those were the only points WBU would put on the board as the Pioneers were held to their lowest output in five years.
The Rams went on to tack on an insurance touchdown with an 85-yard interception return with 10 minutes left in the contest. It was one of three WBU interceptions.
Both teams struggled to convert on third down, with Wayland going 2-for-14 and Texas Wesleyan 2-for-11. Additionally, on fourth down, the Pioneers were 1-of-4 and the Rams 1-of-3.
Wayland ended with 313 total yards, including 255 in the air. The Pioneers ran 25 times for 58 yards. Quarterback
Mitchell Parsley completed 8-of-19 for 70 yards with two picks while
Nick Quintero was 12-of-25 for 185 yards and one INT.
Brayln Kirby caught nine passes for 89 yards.
The Rams produced 423 yards, with 322 coming on the ground. Texas Wesleyan had players with 92, 104 and 123 yards rushing.
Wayland, which was hoping to win its final two games to secure a winning record, wraps up the season by hosting No. 22 Langston (7-2, 6-1 SAC), which defeated Texas College on Saturday, 44-0.
