As Texas Tech prepares to play for the NCAA men's basketball title tonight, the Red Raiders have a couple of ties to Wayland Baptist University.
Assistant coach Mark Adams coached the Pioneers for four years, from 1983-1987. He compiled a 100-39 record for a .719 winning percentage, second only to his successor and current WBU athletics director
Rick Cooper.
Adams went on to coach at West Texas A&M University, as did Cooper. Adams was inducted into the
WBU Athletics Hall of Honor in 2017.
Adams is recognized as the architect of Tech's tremendous defense, as noted in
this article published by NBCSports.com.
Also of note is the fact that Tech sophomore Jarrett Culver is the younger brother to Wayland junior
J.J. Culver. Oldest brother Trey Culver is a two-time NCAA indoor national high jump champion at Tech.
J.J. and Jarrett enjoyed remarkably similar seasons in 2018-19, as noted in
this article that appeared recently in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
