Wayland Baptist scored first and last, but also gave up two goals in between as the Pioneers' home-opener against Sul Ross State ended in a 2-2 tie on Friday evening at Hilliard Field.
"A tie is better than a loss, but we would have liked to have come out with a victory," Wayland coach
Shiloh Posey said. "We had to come from behind, so I was proud of the girls for not packing it in and hanging tough."
After a 3-1 victory over University of the Southwest (N.M.) in their season-opener Monday, the Pioneers (1-0-1) took a quick 1-0 lead when freshman
Natalie Terry scored her first collegiate goal less than five minutes into the match on a deflection after a corner kick.
That was the lone goal of the half, but the NCAA Division III Lobos (0-2-1) tied it up just over a minute into the second half. Ten minutes later Sul Ross State found the back of the net again and took a 2-1 lead.
Senior
Taylor Moore helped save the day for the Pioneers when she scored her second goal of the young season with 12:09 to play.
Megan Attenborough, who had two goals in the season debut, assisted.
Wayland took twice as many shots as the Lobos – 24-12 – and put 16 on-goal compared to nine for the visitors. Attenborough fired seven shots with five on-target, while Moore got off six shots with four on-goal.
"We got a great team effort tonight," Posey said. "Everybody did their job well."
The Pioneers are next in action at noon Monday in San Antonio against Our Lady of the Lake before going to Odessa Thursday to face Texas-Permian Basin. WBU's next home match is Sept. 17 against Howard Payne.
