Wayland Baptist's Bianca Roman and Iris Nevarez have been named Sooner Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, in women's soccer.
Â
The two were honored after the Pioneers won their season-opener last week, defeating Arizona Christian, 3-2.
Â
Roman, a 5-foot senior defender from Fort Worth, scored two goals, first on a penalty kick then on a laser shot from 12 yards out. The two goals matched Roman's total in 17 games last season.
Â
Roman got off six of Wayland's 13 shots, half of which were on-goal.
Â
Nevarez, a 5-foot-7 senior from Dumas, played goalkeeper for the second half of the match, earning the win when the Pioneers prevailed from a 1-1 intermission tie. Nevarez allowed one goal while recording one save in her 45 minutes in goal.
Â
It was Nevarez's first time at keeper since her freshman year when she spent seven minutes defending the posts. Nevarez, who has been limited by injury, has spent the rest of her playing time in the field.
Â
The Pioneers next play Oct. 16 at home against Oklahoma-Panhandle State.
