Volleyball ends fall with third straight win

BETHANY, Okla. – Wayland Baptist ended its official fall season by winning its third straight match Friday evening when the Pioneer volleyball team swept Southwestern Christian University here, 25-12, 25-11, 25-19.

Playing their first match in two weeks and after scrimmaging West Texas A&M in a doubleheader Thursday in Canyon, Wayland had little problem dispatching the Eagles (1-5).

"We played well," WBU coach Jim Giacomazzi said. "We jumped out to a big lead, then it got a little sloppy, but overall it went well.

"It was nice to see them run some plays we've been working on…good just to get some confidence and play."

The Pioneers hit a season-best .329, led by Kellie Kozak's near career-high .643 with 10 kills on 14 attacks. Amber Daniel hit .421 with nine kills along with 10 digs. Tatijana Markic added a team-best dozen digs, and Lucie Mahelova led with 25 assists.

Wayland produced 15 aces, the most for the program since 2011 when the Pioneers set a record with 19 aces against Huston-Tillotson. Six players combined for the 15 aces, paced by Tevia Bell with five.

"It was a stats night for the girls," Giacomazzi said. "We served well, passed well…it was one of those matches we should have won and did."

While the Pioneers were without Paxton Patterson, they got freshman Mia Stevens and junior Shykerra Fanner back. "It was good to see them do some things," Giacomazzi said.

The Pioneers (3-3) dropped their first three matches of the season before winning their last three, all on the road, over Central Christian, Mid-America Christian and Southwestern Christian.

"I think we'll be OK," Giacomazzi said.

Wayland actually ends the fall season Saturday in Moore, Okla., with an 11 a.m. scrimmage against Randall University.
