Baseballers unblemished after another sweep

Wayland Baptist scored 11 runs in both of Saturday's games against Adams State, winning the first 11-0 and the second 11-9 in dramatic comeback fashion as the Pioneers completed a second season-opening, four-game sweep to remain perfect on the young season.

Wayland's 8-0 start is the best for the Pioneers since 2004 when the team won its first 21 contests.

The Pioneers, who on Friday defeated the NCAA Division II Grizzlies of Alamosa, Colo., 8-1 and 5-3, recorded their second shutout of the season in Saturday's opener. The scheduled nine-inning second game marked Wayland's toughest challenge of the season as the Pioneers trailed 9-3 after 3½ innings.

But senior designated hitter Brendon Foust came up with a three-run, two-out home run in the bottom of the eighth to win it. It was Foust's second homer of the game, third of the day, fourth of the series, and fifth of the season.

Foust's first homer of game 2 was a solo shot in the second, after Adams State (0-4) scored four in the first. The Grizzlies put up four more in the second for an 8-1 advantage.

Foust ripped an RBI-triple as part of a two-run third, then Adams State scored its final run of the game in the fourth to take a 9-3 lead.

After Ramon Cruz hit an RBI-sacrifice fly in the fourth, Dawin Santos really got the rally started with a solo home run in the sixth. An RBI-double by Gregory Ozuna later in the inning made it 9-6.

Wayland's five-run eighth started with an innocent walk to catcher Derek Farmer. After a strikeout and groundout, Austin Moya drove in courtesy runner Tristan Galbreath. Vargas singled, as did Rivera to plate Moya and bring up Foust who delivered in a big way with the game-winning blast.

Foust went 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Moya was 3-for-5 while Ozuna, Rivera, Santos and Jacob Adams all had two hits in Wayland's 15-hit barrage.

Junior Deric Trevino (1-0), the last of four Wayland pitchers, picked up the win after entering in the eighth, allowing two hits, striking out two and walking one in his two innings of work.

In Saturday's opener, the Pioneers rolled to their most-lopsided win since a 16-3 victory over Bacone last March 8.

Wayland scored in each of the first five innings, including a four-run second prior to three straight two-run frames.

Eight Pioneers combined for 11 hits, two each by Ozuna, Moya and Vargas. Besides Foust's solo home run, Luis Vargas went deep for the second straight day with a two-run shot for his fifth of the season.

Newcomer Jose Suero and Andrew Manier combined on a two-hitter. Suero allowed just one hit in five innings, striking out six and walking three. In his two innings of one-hit ball, Manier struck out one and walked one.

The Pioneers continue their 18-game, season-opening homestand next weekend against MidAmerica Nazarene, Kan., hosting the Pioneers in doubleheaders at 2 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday. The series will mark the first games of the season for MANU, which went 19-16 last season. Wayland took three of four from the team from Olathe, Kan., two years ago at Wilder.
