Strong 'D' propels Pioneers to 94-42 romp

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Wayland Baptist gave up just 16 second-half points as the Pioneers rocketed past Bacone College in a non-conference game here Thursday night, 94-42.

J.J. Culver scored 16 points while Jack Nobles, CJ Obinwa and Matthew Mulloy put in a dozen each as Wayland (18-9) won its fourth straight. Tre Fillmore also reached double-digits with 10 points.

The Pioneers, now ranked the equivalent of 30th in the NAIA, got a career-high eight points and 11 rebounds from 6-foot-11 junior transfer Deng Bol Yol. Wayland ended with 63 rebounds, while the winless Warriors (0-23) got just 27.

Wayland scored the game's first 14 points before going onto a 25-3 lead. The Warriors hit four 3-pointers late in the first half to close to within 44-26 at the half.

The Pioneers pulled way away with an 18-0 run in the second half that saw Culver score 11 in a row, including back-to-back 3-pointers, one of which he turned into a four-point play.

The final 52-point margin was Wayland's largest lead of the game. The Pioneers downed Bacone by 57, 104-47, when they teams met Jan. 25 in Plainview.

Wayland shot 53 percent (39-of-74) from the field, hitting 7-of-23 3-pointers (30 percent).
