After blasting six home runs in two games Friday, Wayland Baptist sent out five long balls Saturday afternoon when
Deric Trevino tossed a four-hitter and the red-hot Pioneers defeated Central Christian (Kan.), 13-3, to complete a sweep of the Sooner Athletic Conference series at Wilder Field.
Â
Five different Pioneers contributed to Wayland's home run derby Saturday, including
Dawin Santos who also homered twice Friday when teammate
Luis Vargas recorded three in WBU's 14-2 and 7-2 wins. Vargas leads the NAIA with 18 home runs and Santos is third with 12.Â
Brendon Foust is tied for fifth with 10 as that trio has combined to provide the Pioneers with 40 of their 54 homers, which ranks second in the NAIA. Wayland hit 35 home runs all of last season; the program record for most in a season is 119 in 2009.
Â
It was a two-run home run by
Gregory Ozuna, who also homered Friday, that ended Saturday's game on the 10-run rule during a four-run seventh inning.
Â
Also going deep Saturday were
Jacob Adams,
Jake Green and
Marco Rivera. Adams and Rivera both had two-run shots in Wayland's five-run third that allowed the Pioneers to overcome an early 3-2 deficit. It was the third time this season Wayland has hit five homers in a game.
Â
Wayland wound up with 13 hits, with Ozuna going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Green was 2-for-2 with two RBIs while Vargas was 2-for-3.
Â
Trevino, who improved to 3-0, gave up a two-run homer in the first and a solo shot in the third for all three of the Tigers' runs and half their hits. Trevino struck out six and walked just one.
Â
The win pushed Wayland to 21-7 on the season and 5-1 in the conference; CCC fell to 7-16, 0-6.
