Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer settles for tie in another double-OT outing

Playing their third consecutive Sooner Athletic Conference double-overtime match, the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team wound up in a scoreless tie with visiting Central Christian College (Kan.) on Wednesday evening at Hilliard Field.

"We deserved the result we got today. Our performance was not good enough. It took us too long to start playing," frustrated WBU coach Robert Ssejjemba said.

Wayland (5-3-1, 1-0-2 SAC) certainly won the statistics, outshooting the Tigers (5-5-1, 0-2-1), 25-7, with eight shots on-goal compared to just two for the visitors. Samba Gnokane and Hector Romero led the Pioneers with eight and six shots, respectively, followed by Bryan Alfaro's four. Half of Romero's and Alfaro's shots were on-target.

"Central Christian came with a plan and maintained their discipline throughout the game, making it difficult for us to penetrate their backline," Ssejjemba said.

The Tigers were on their heels much of the contest and seemed content – especially in the two extra periods – to back to Kansas with a tie.

"I thought we should have scored a couple of goals but with all the pressure on Central Christian, we were very wasteful," Ssejjemba said.

It was WBU's fourth double-OT match this season, first at-home, and second tie. The Pioneers tied Texas Wesleyan in their conference debut, 3-3, before defeating John Brown in dramatic fashion last Saturday, 2-1.

Next for Wayland is a home contest with Oklahoma City (7-3, 1-2), at 5 p.m. Saturday. The Stars have dropped SAC matches to Mid-America Christian, 4-1, and Oklahoma-Panhandle State, 3-1, while getting a win over Southwestern Assemblies of God, 5-3.
