AUSTIN – Jordan Brannon and Gage Hulse both posted career scoring bests to lead the Wayland Baptist men's basketball team to a 72-59 victory over Huston-Tillotson here Friday night.
Brannon scored 18 points and Hulse 15, while RJ Mason added 11 plus pulled down eight rebounds to match Jibrael Washington for team-high honors. Washington also had four blocks.
The Pioneers (3-1) never trailed in the contest. They led by as many as 12 in the first half but were up only three, 37-34, early in the second half. Wayland went on a 14-4 run right after that to stretch the margin to 13 points.
The Pioneers' largest lead was 17, 65-48.
Brannon hit all four of Wayland's 3-pointers, going 4-for-7. The Rams put in eight 3s but made only 53 percent (9-of-17) from the free-throw line, where WBU was 12-of-14 (86 percent).
The Pioneers outrebounded the Rams (1-4), 40-26.
Wayland will be back on the court in 24 hours, facing unbeaten Our Lady of the Lake (3-0) at 6 p.m. Saturday in San Antonio. The Saints have defeated Southwestern Christian, 103-90, Arkansas Baptist, 74-68, and first-year Wayland coach Clint Galyean's former team, Central Baptist (Ark.), 79-72.
