Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Soccer teams drop two at OCU

OKLAHOMA CITY – It was mostly a forgettable road trip for the Wayland Baptist men's and women's soccer teams when the Pioneers visited Oklahoma City University on Saturday afternoon. The Stars swept the matches, winning the women's contest, 3-0, and the men's, 2-0.

It was the first loss of the season for coach Shiloh Posey's women's squad, which had won its first three outings of the season, including a 3-2 road victory over Oklahoma-Panhandle State on Tuesday that marked the team's spring season-opener after a four-month break from the COVID-19 ravaged fall schedule.

In their game against the Stars (2-0, 2-0 SAC), Wayland played OCU to a scoreless first-half stalemate before the home team broke through with a goal less than two minutes after intermission. The Stars then scored a pair of goals – both by Sofia Carvajal Granados – within 68 seconds of each other bridging the 73rd and 74th minutes.

Wayland (3-1, 1-1 SAC) was limited to five shots, four of which were on-goal but all saved by OCU keeper Josie Knox.

The WBU men (5-3-1, 0-1-1 SAC) were hoping to pick up their first SAC win after tying OPSU on Tuesday, 1-1. The Stars, though, had other plans.

OCU (2-0, 2-0 SAC) took a 1-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the action, then made it 2-0 in the 39th minute, before a scoreless second half.

The Pioneers got off one more shot than OCU, 6-5, but couldn't make any of them count against OCU keeper Danilo Vilani. Each team had four on-goal attempts. Marco Magnoli fired half of Wayland's shots, all of which were on target.

Wayland is back in action Wednesday, March 3 as the Pioneers host John Brown (Ark.). Those games – 4 p.m. for the women and 6 for the men – will be played at Lubbock Cooper High School due to issues with the grass at Hilliard Field.
