LUBBOCK – After holding their own for 64 minutes, the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team couldn't close out University of the Southwest and fell to the Drovers on Tuesday afternoon at Berl Huffman Soccer Complex, 4-2.
Wayland (4-6, 2-6 Sooner Athletic Conference) got goals from
Vitoria Balieiro in the 27
th minute and
Bianca Roman in the 59
th minute as the Pioneers took 1-0 and 2-1 leads. But USAO (10-4, 5-3) scored three goals in a span of less than 10 minutes to spoil Wayland's upset hopes.
The Drovers controlled possession most of the way, taking 36 shots to Wayland's nine, with USAO getting 15 shots on-goal compared to the Pioneers' four. While WBU was much more efficient, scoring on half of its on-target shots, the Drovers eventually wore down the Pioneers.
Bianca Roman, who assisted Balieiro's goal, was the only Pioneer to take more than one shot, and she got off four. Roman has scored in each of Wayland's last three outings, netting four balls.
WBU keeper
Iris Nevarez recorded a career-high 11 saves, three more than her previous best.
The Pioneers wrap up the regular-season at noon Saturday in Bethany, Okla., against Southwestern Christian (4-7, 2-5). Wayland may need a win to assure a spot in the eight-team SAC Tournament.
