No. 12 JBU too tough for Pioneers

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Looking to pull off another "miracle" in Arkansas, the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team instead came up short Thursday afternoon against 12th-ranked, undefeated John Brown University, falling 6-0 in the quarterfinals of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament.

"To give credit, JBU was extremely good today on both sides of the ball," Wayland coach Shiloh Posey said.

The top-seeded Golden Eagles (10-0) scored 10 minutes into the match and again in the 31st minute to lead at the half, 2-0. JBU then poured it on in the second half, scoring four times within a 23-minute period.

"It seems fortune was on their side to some degree," Posey noted. "Their first goal hit the back post and rolled across the goal before going in on the other post, and they scored two goals from set pieces of 30-plus yards away, and one was a mishit cross that found its way under the crossbar.

"That being said, they still played a very good game with a relentless attack and defense."

The Golden Eagles, who defeated Wayland 3-0 when they met in Lubbock on March 3, got off 30 shots compared to just two for Wayland. Both of the Pioneers' attempts, one of which was on-goal, were by All-SAC Second Team honoree Bianca Roman, a senior.

WBU keeper Iris Nevarez logged seven saves.

"Our ladies battled all day, and I can't express my appreciation for the valiant effort and constant strength that they showed," Posey said. "I'm very grateful to be their coach and could not ask for a better group."

While SAC regular-season champion John Brown advances to the semifinals to face Texas Wesleyan or Oklahoma City, Wayland ends its season six-month-long, COVID- 19-extended season 4-8. The Pioneers won their first three matches of the season but only one of their last nine.

"At the end of the game we spoke about the short turnaround until next season and how we don't have to wait as long to come back and begin our next opportunity," Posey said. "We look forward to the start of next season and the successes that are ahead."
