#11 Buffs throw kink into season-opener

West Texas A&M managed goals in the last two minutes of each half as the NCAA Division II, 11th-ranked Buffaloes spoiled the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team's season-opener Wednesday evening at Hilliard Field, 2-0.

The Buffaloes, who viewed the match as an exhibition, got on the board with a goal by Chris Palomino after a deflection in front of the WBU pipes with 1:25 left before intermission. Then, with Wayland scrambling to tie the score in the closing minutes, WTAMU's Giancarlo Saldana worked the ball around WBU keeper Kade Tomlinson with just under 2:00 to play in the match.

The Pioneers got off seven shots, three on goal all by Marco Magnoli, compared to 11 shots, four on-goal, by WTAMU. Magnoli had four shots in total.

Wayland fell to 0-3 all-time vs. WTAMU.

The Pioneers will look to secure their first win when they host University of the Southwest at 7 p.m. Saturday back at the Wayland Bowl.
