Pioneer football team rolls in SAC opener

BATESVILLE, Ark. – Four different players scored touchdowns – three in the first quarter – as Wayland Baptist opened Sooner Athletic Conference play with a convincing 31-7 victory over Lyon College (Ark.) here Saturday afternoon.

"The guys came in with a vision that they were going to make things happen to be able to win, and they did it," WBU coach Butch Henderson said. "We played very disciplined offensively and defensively put together a really good football game."

Nick Quintero had a big game, completing 27-of-33 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns, a 7-yarder to Skyler Whitten and a 3-yarder to Justyn Harrison.

"Nick played extremely well. What you don't see in the stats is the job he did getting us into the right play. He did a phenomenal job of putting everything together," Henderson said.

Jadon Miles and Jacoby Hunt both had rushing TDs on runs of nine and two yards. Jeffrey Lucido completed the scoring with a 23-yard field goal and four PATs.

Wayland (1-1, 1-0 SAC) scored on its first three possession of the game, taking a 17-0 lead with 38 seconds left in the first period.

"We were able to take those first three drives and get points. That really set a tempo for the ballgame. And in between those we were getting stops defensively. It was a great team effort from the standpoint of playing off of each other and playing rhythm football."

The Pioneers added seven more points in the second for a commanding 24-0 halftime lead.

Wayland made it 31-0 early in the fourth before Lyon (0-3, 0-2) finally got on the board with 4½ minutes left in the game.

Hunt and Miles both rushed for 57 yards while Brendan Strickland led 11 different players with receptions with seven catches for 93 yards, including a 56-yarder.

On defense, the Pioneers got six tackles from Manny Arguijo and five from Devron Sims. Samuel Daily had for stops, half of a sack and recovered a fumble.

Wayland makes its home debut at 2 p.m. next Saturday against Langston (1-0), which took on Texas College at home on Saturday after opening the season with a 10-7 road victory over Oklahoma-Panhandle State last week.
