The Wayland Baptist women's soccer team will take a rare four-match winning streak into its conference opener after recording a 2-0 victory over Jarvis Christian on Thursday evening at Hilliard Field.
Â
The Pioneers (4-2) got goals from
Aryial Garcia and
Bianca Roman as they posted their third shutout during the four-match streak.
Â
"It was a great team win tonight," Wayland coach
Shiloh Posey said. "The ladies moved the ball well, defended quickly and attacked the goal with intensity. Our possession of the ball has improved significantly and things are beginning to click."
Â
It's just the third four-match win streak in the program's 18-year history. The Pioneers first won four-in-a-row in 2011 then again in 2018 when they won five straight. This year's team can match that win a win over Texas Wesleyan next Tuesday in Fort Worth in the Sooner Athletic Conference opener. The Rams are 5-1-1, last defeating Texas A&M-Texarkana on Sept. 18, 2-1.
Â
"We start SAC play on Tuesday, so it's nice to be coming in on a positive note," Posey said.
Â
Against Jarvis Christian (1-5-0), it took Wayland just 4½ minutes to get on the board with Garcia getting her first goal of the season, assisted by
Mayra Sosa and
Bianca Roman.
Â
Wayland got an insurance goal just under eight minutes after halftime when Roman took a pass from
Natalie Terry and, after juking the JCC keeper, scored her team-high five goal of the season.
Â
Wayland dominated possession, outshooting the visitors, 31-5. Roman tied a program record first set by career-scoring leader Emarie Holland in 2013 with 12 shots, five of which were on-goal. A total of 17 of Wayland's shots were on-target. Garcia took four shots and
Madyson Brooks three. Ten players offered shots.
Â
WBU keeper
Kanade Morita logged two saves, while JCC's Jazul Amaya walked away with 15.
Â
"The one area that we need to improve is our shooting efficiency. We have to convert when we have our chances," Posey said. "There will be games that we will have a very limited number of opportunities, and we need to finish.
Â
"Overall, I'm extremely proud of the effort the ladies are putting in and happy for the result."
