Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Subs power Pioneers to lopsided win

All four of Wayland Baptist's double-figure scorers came off the bench as the Pioneers rolled to a lopsided 92-51 Sooner Athletic Conference victory over Langston on Saturday afternoon at Hutcherson Center.

The Pioneers (12-11, 8-8 SAC) were a bit slow out of the game and found themselves down by five in the early stages. But Wayland went on a 17-4 run to go from a four-point deficit to a 31-20 lead with five minutes left in the first half, and for all practical purposes the game was over.

Wayland held an 18-point, 48-30 lead at halftime, and the last-place Lions (1-20-, 0-16) never got any closer than that after intermission. The Pioneers went up by as many as 43 points.

Josh Servantez led Wayland with 16 points, including three 3-pointers. Thad Udoh added 13 points, Bryan Rector 12 and Dylan McDougal 11. RJ Mason paced the WBU starters with nine. Gage Hulse put up seven points along with a team-high seven rebounds and seven assists.

Jibrael Washington ended with a career-best nine blocks. With seven rejections in the first half, the 6-foot-8 senior was on pace to break the program record of 13.

Seven different players hit 3s for WBU, with Servantez the only Pioneer with more than one.

After a season-low six turnovers in Thursday's win over Central Christian, the Pioneers only gave it away eight times Saturday.

Wayland established season-best marks in the SAC this season for scoring and points allowed.

It was the Pioneers' first game without leading scorer Parish Hewitt, who joined the lineup in mid-January and played in the maximum number of games (six) before being able to redshirt and play a full senior season in 2022-23.

The Pioneers play two more home games next week, hosting John Brown (15-9, 9-7) on Thursday night and Oklahoma City (13-10, 12-4) on Saturday afternoon. WBU had to forfeit both of those games in the first half of conference play due to COVID-19 issues. JBU knocked off SAGU on Saturday, 65-63, while OCU topped North Texas-Dallas, 75-63.
