Men's soccer settles for 1-1 tie in Kansas

McPHERSON, Kan. – Wayland Baptist settled for a 1-1 tie when the Pioneers and Central Christian (Kan.) both scored in the final 13 minutes of the Sooner Athletic Conference match here Friday evening.

Wayland (4-6-2, 1-3-1 SAC) scored first when Jamie Rinquest, a junior from South Africa, scored his first goal as a Pioneer in the 77th minute.

Wayland was poised to post its second conference victory when, with 2:39 left, a miscommunication on a headed back pass to the Pioneer goal keeper wound up in the net, allowing the Tigers (6-3-4, 1-2-2) to squeak out a tie.

Although Wayland was outshot, 17-6, the Pioneers recorded twice as many shots on-goal, 4-to-2. Rivas had two of those for Wayland while Santiago Hernandez and Jamie Rinquest had one each.

The game marked the end to a three-match road swing and leads into a three-match homestand for the Pioneers, starting with a 6 p.m. contest Tuesday against Southwestern Assemblies of God (1-10, 0-4).
