The teams played to a near standstill in the first half, but Southwestern Assemblies of God University pulled away in the second half to hand Wayland Baptist a 30-0 setback Saturday afternoon at Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldog Stadium.
SAGU (5-3, 4-3) led just 3-0 at halftime but scored 17 points in the third quarter and 10 more in the fourth, leaving Wayland (2-6, 2-5) with a fourth-straight setback.
The Lions used a combination of rushing by Keaton Dudik (21 carries, 90 yards) and passing between quarterback Briley Green and Paul Odidi, who hooked up eight times for 190 yards and two touchdowns, many on sideline back-shoulder throws. Green, a freshman, threw for 342 yards.
Wayland's offense couldn't gain any momentum, ending with seven first downs and 187 yards. Pioneers quarterbacks completed 11-of-33 passes, to nine different receivers, with one interception.
On defense,
Casey Buck produced 11 tackles (four solo) and four tackles for loss.
Brayden Welch punted 12 times for a 43.3-yard average. The game featured 19 total points.
It was Wayland's first shutout since a 50-0 loss to Langston in the third game of last season.
WBU winds up its season against the SAC's two Arizona schools. First, the Pioneers travel to Surprise, Ariz., to take on No. 20 Ottawa (5-2, 5-2), which was off this weekend, before hosting Arizona Christian (5-2, 4-2) Nov. 12.
